For families living in Germany with ties to Türkiye, we outline Mutterschutz, Mutterschaftsgeld and Elterngeld, compare them briefly with leave in Türkiye, and point to current sources.
Rules can change; we describe the situation as of the date this article was prepared (October 2026). If you live in Germany, or move between two countries, it is very easy to mix up birth-related rights. Here is a short overview of the German framework compared with Türkiye; the details differ for every family.
Mutterschutz: protection before and after birth
In Germany the protection period (Schutzfrist) starts 6 weeks before the expected due date and usually ends 8 weeks after birth. After premature or multiple births the post-birth period is 12 weeks (also on request if the child has a disability). Before birth you may keep working if you explicitly wish, and you can withdraw that decision; after birth the work ban is absolute.
Mutterschaftsgeld
The statutory health insurer (gesetzliche Krankenkasse) pays at most 13 euros a day; the employer tops it up to your average net pay (Arbeitgeberzuschuss). For privately insured or family-insured women the application goes to the Bundesamt für Soziale Sicherung, with a total cap of 210 euros.
Elterngeld
Basic Elterngeld is usually 65% of net income, at least 300 and at most 1,800 euros per month. Both parents together can receive it for 14 months; each parent needs at least 2 months, and one parent alone can take at most 12 months (single parents 14). ElterngeldPlus is half the amount but runs longer (150–900 euros); there is also the Partnerschaftsbonus for couples working 24–32 hours a week. Amounts can change by law.
Elternzeit
Elternzeit is the right to take unpaid time off work to care for the baby, with special protection against dismissal. For its length and job-security details, see the official Familienportal and BMBFSFJ pages; we give no duration here.
Comparison with Türkiye
- In Türkiye maternity leave is 8 weeks before + 16 weeks after birth, 24 weeks in total (since 2026).
- In Türkiye paternity leave is 10 days for employees and civil servants.
- In Germany income support comes through Elterngeld; in Türkiye employees have the SGK maternity allowance.
If you have worked or been insured in both countries, which country grants which right depends on your insurance history and residence. Get precise information from your Krankenkasse, the Elterngeldstelle and, if needed, SGK. We do not interpret the coordination rules between the two countries here.
Points that are often confused
The daily cap for Mutterschaftsgeld is 13 euros; this should be seen together with the employer topping up the difference, so a drop in income is not necessarily the outcome. Elterngeld is a separate benefit that can be taken for 14 months together, requiring at least 2 months for each parent. Because the two countries’ systems are built differently, setting week counts directly side by side can mislead. What matters is getting current, written information from the institution in the country where you live. Multilingual counselling services can support you here.
What you can do
- Before birth, clarify Mutterschutz dates with your Krankenkasse and employer.
- Prepare the Elterngeld application promptly after birth; ask the Elterngeldstelle for the required documents.
- If you have ties to both countries, keep your records (contributions, residence) in order.
- For birth notification and civil registration in Türkiye, see the current notices of the relevant consulate.
- If language is a barrier, free counselling centres can help.
